What if you realised the review you were reading was all about you? Don’t worry, it’s not, but…
What if you realised the book you were reading was all about you?
When an intriguing novel appears on Catherine’s bedside table, she curls up in bed and begins to read.
But as she turns the pages she is sickened to realize the story will reveal her darkest secret.
A secret she thought no one else knew…
Disclaimer had me gripped from the very first page until I put the book down at the very end. With short, punchy, intriguing chapters, it didn’t take me long to race through this exciting thriller.
Renee Knight doesn’t give a lot away at the start of this one. We have no idea what Catherine’s secret is, only that it’s being exposed in a book which has somehow made its way to her bedside table. As the story goes on, we’re drip-fed information via Catherine’s chapters written in third-person narrative and Stephen Brigstocke’s chapters written in first-person narrative.
Neither of the main characters were particularly likeable, but that wasn’t an issue. Stephen made me feel slightly uncomfortable, but I began to feel sorry for Catherine as her and Stephen’s stories weaved together and Catherine’s life falls apart around her.
Disclaimer features some clever twists and turns, resulting in a story full of tension and suspense. It’s an excellent concept for a book. After all, what could be more scary than picking up a novel and discovering you are a main character and it exposes your worst secret, one buried long ago, one which you thought no one knew.
Sometimes a book is hyped up by everyone, but when you pick it up it isn’t so good. Disclaimer is good, believe me. Believe the hype. After the success of The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, Disclaimer is another great debut released by Doubleday this year and I’m sure it’s going to be one of this year’s best sellers.
After thoroughly enjoying Disclaimer, I’ll definitely be on the look out for what comes next from Renee Knight.

Please note: I received this book free via NetGalley from Transworld Publishers in return for a review. However, this has in no way influenced my opinion of the book.
I adored this book so much I ordered my friend to buy herself a copy. It has such a good concept and I couldn’t get over how easily a few sentences totally changed my opinion of what had gone before… great review of my favourite book of the year so far.
A great review, another book for my Wishlist!
I have to read this – it sounds wonderful.
Hi Nikki,
Following such glowing reviews by fellow Goodreads bloggers such as Cleo, who I see stopped by here earlier, this book is already on my wish list.
The premise sounds so unique and intriguing that I just couldn’t pass it by and that you have now added your own glowing review to the list, just about seals it for me and I have just been on to Netgalley to request my copy, so am hoping I shall be successful
Yvonne.
My imagination has certainly been captured by this one. Thanks for sharing what sounds like a wonderfully eerie read.
I’ve just finished it – wonderful! x
I heard about this book from Barbara last week. Looks like I’d have to check it out soon, too!
