The Bookette has set up a brand new challenge for 2011 – The British Books Challenge! The aim of this challenge is to read books by British authors throughout 2011. I think this is a great chance to promote our great British authors and, perhaps, to come across some new ones.
There are two entry categories for the challenge: Home Grown (for British bloggers – a target of 12 books by British authors) and International Friend (for overseas bloggers – read either 6 or 12 books). The books don’t have to be just ones released in 2011, they can be old or new and for any age or genre.
Here are the books I’ve read so far for the challenge:
1. Darkside by Belinder Bauer (My review posted 9th January 2011)
2. Gone by Mo Hayder (My review posted 30th January 2011)
3. Birdman by Mo Hayder (My review posted 9th February 2011)
4. Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch (My review posted 19th February 2011)
5. Hanging Hill by Mo Hayder (My review posted 27th February 2011)
6. Strangers on the 16:02 by Priya Basil (My review posted 1st March 2011)
7. The Chemistry of Death by Simon Beckett (My review posted 6th March 2011)
8. Full Dark House by Christopher Fowler (My review posted 12th March 2011)
9. Written in Bone by Simon Beckett (My review posted 16th March 2011)
10. Whispers of the Dead by Simon Beckett (My review posted 20th March 2011)
11. The Calling of the Grave by Simon Beckett (My review posted 26th March 2011)
12. The End of the Wasp Season by Denise Mina (My review posted 17th April 2011)

19. Zoe and Beans: The Magic Hoop! by Chloe & Mick Inkpen (My review posted 25th July 2011)
20. Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith (My review posted 30th July 2011)
21. Mud, Sweat and Tears by Bear Grylls (My review posted 9th August 2011)
22. The Secret Speech by Tom Rob Smith (My review posted 21st August 2011)
23. The Colour of Death by Michael Cordy (My review posted 3rd September 2011)
24. Agent 6 by Tom Rob Smith (My review posted 16th September 2011)
25. The Accidental Adventurer by Ben Fogle (My review posted 23rd October 2011)
26. Velvet by Mary Hooper (My review posted 27th November 2011)
27. Bryant & May and The Memory of Blood by Christopher Fowler (My review posted 29th December 2011)
I was also hoping to read Going Postal by Terry Pratchett but I somehow never got around to it. Maybe in 2012!
December 2011 – Well, I far exceeded my target of 12 books. I wonder how I’ll do in 2012…

… and this week I’m reading Clockwork Angel (Book 1 of The Infernal Devices trilogy) by Cassandra Clare.
I’ve read quite a few good reviews of the book and so finally decided to treat myself by buying the Kindle edition yesterday. I got stuck into it last night and I’m enjoying it so far.
I also ordered myself a couple of books in the sales yesterday… Paranormalcy by Kiersten White and The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff. Again, I chose both of these having previously read great reviews for them.
I also got some books for Christmas. When it comes to birthdays and Christmas, my friend Sarah & I have a tendancy to buy each other books (along with one or two other things… but there’s nearly always a book involved!). This year Sarah gave me Three Fates by Nora Roberts, Dying to Please by Linda Howard and The Black Angel by John Connolly.
Other Christmas presents I’ve received (or will be receiving) include a delivery of Lush goodies (Actually ordered on Christmas Day just after the online sale started, so will get some bonus goodies too… Lucky it was ordered then because the Lush website has been down with issues since yesterday morning), Lint Lindor Milk Chocolates (I’m not supposed to eat milk chocolate – I’m lactose intolerant – but I love these and can make them last ages by only having 1 or 2 a day!), Take That’s Look Back, Don’t Stare documentary on DVD, a framed photo of my beautiful neice Taiha. among other things.
I managed to reduce my sister-in-law to tears on Christmas Day! They were happy tears though! I’d scanned Taiha’s first official baby photo from when she was born, printed an enlargement at work and framed it, and I gave it to my brother & sister-in-law for Christmas.
So, all in all, it’s been a good Christmas. We’ve still got the snow, although it’s melting in places due to the rain we’ve had today. However, it looks like we’re due some more snow. Will it ever end?!

The snow is still with us and so is my cold! I’ve had it for a couple of weeks now. Normally I’ll feel rough for a couple of days and one or two symptoms will stick around for a while, but with this cold I’ve felt rough since it came on and I seem to get a new symptom every day… including an unwelcome nosebleed this morning (not good when you’ve already got a runny nose)!
I usually love snow, but I’m getting a bit fed up of it at the moment. On Monday evening it took me an hour and a half to get home from work, instead of the usual 25 minutes. Yesterday, I finished work half an hour early (hoping to avoid the traffic) and it still took me an hour and 15 minutes!
Last week the postman didn’t make it on 2 days and he didn’t make it today either. I’m still waiting on a couple of things to arrive for Christmas, but I may be giving I.O.U.’s instead if they don’t arrive. Even without those couple of presents not arriving, I’m still not ready for Christmas, I’ve got cards to write and hand out, as well as other presents to wrap.
At this time of year I always recommend a certain website for kids and believers – The Official NORAD Santa Tracker. You can follow Santa as he makes his deliveries on Christmas Eve… Just make sure you’re in bed before he reaches your country!
