Brighten Up

Written by Nikki-ann on Sunday, 30 August , 2009 at 7:15 pm

Flower

I can’t tell you what this flower is… We’ve lost the tag! We’ve cut a few from the garden and put them in the kitchen window to brighten it up a bit.

In fact, I could do with being brightened up a bit! On Thursday I had one of my top wisdom teeth extracted (which I think hurt my purse more than it hurt me) and then yesterday (after taking my Mum, Nan & Granddad out for a meal for Granddad’s birthday) a chipping flew up and hit the top of my windscreen, resulting in a large crack. So now my windscreen needs replacing (and they can’t come out to do it until Tuesday, depending on the weather, because it’s a Bank Holiday weekend) – another dent to my bank balance! I was going to make an appointment to see the optician in September, but I think I’d better’d leave that until October as I’ve got another dental appointment in a week or two for a check-up.

On a happier note… Happy Birthday to my friend Kim!

Daisy Chains

Little Daisy

This week’s Thematic Photographic theme over at Carmi’s is “Summer“. Daisies remind me of summer. As kids, we’d sit on the playing field picking the daisies and making them into Daisy Chains. Did anyone else do that? You just pinch a hole in the stem and the thread the next daisy through it until you had enough to make a bracelet. It’s been a long, long time since I sat making Daisy Chains, I can tell you!

What does summer remind you of?

Abandoned

Written by Nikki-ann on Sunday, 16 August , 2009 at 6:04 pm

St. Mary's Abbey

This week’s Thematic Photographic theme is Abandoned and I thought this photo from my trip to York was ideal. While the beautiful Museum Gardens now surround St. Mary’s Abbey and the area is obviously looked after, it was obviously once abandoned and left to ruin (which is a shame as it looks like it was once a wonderful structure).

The abbey was first built in 1088 and was once one of the wealthiest and most powerful Benedictine monastries in England. Unfortunately, Henry VIII decided to ban all monastries in the 1530’s, so the abbey was converted into a palace for the King when he visited York. Sadly, the abbey fell into ruin.

You may be beginning to think I spent my entire trip to York in the Museum Gardens (see my previous post about the squirrels of the Museum Gardens)! I didn’t, but we (Mum & I) did spend a little time each evening walking through them.

York’s Squirrels

Written by Nikki-ann on Saturday, 15 August , 2009 at 7:12 pm

Sitting on a rock

This week I spent a 3 day “Mother & Daughter” trip in York with Mum. Wondering around the Museum Gardens, we noticed a lot of squirrels. Everywhere we seemed to turn we’d see another squirrel! With them being almost tame, I ended up taking a lot of photos of them. Some people think of them as rodents, but I think they’re cute!

On a side note… I was on my way home from Oswestry and had only just commented that I’d not seen Eddie Izzard on his marathon as I knew he was running through the area this weekend. Just then, who did I see? Eddie Izzard! He was running on the road between Newtown and Welshpool (it looked hard work and painful!). I had my camera with me but couldn’t stop to take photos as we were in traffic (pity!). Eddie is running 30 miles a day in 6 weeks (he says it could be 7!), all in aid of Sport Relief. Well done to Eddie and keep up the hard word!
