February Review Round-up

Written by Nikki-ann on Wednesday, 29 February , 2012 at 7:52 pm

What a month!

I had aimed to review 6 books this month, just like in January, but I didn’t quite make it. I reviewed five, though I’m sure I would have made it to six if February was as long as the other months of the year! Really, is there any reason why February couldn’t borrow a couple of days from those months with 31 days?

Without further ado, here are the books I reviewed this month…

Wonder by R. J. Palacio The English Monster by Lloyd Shepherd Worth Fighting For by Lisa Niemi Swayze
Bereft by Chris Womersley The Life of Rebecca Jones by Angharad Price

5th February 2012 – Wonder by R. J. Palacio
A wonderful story of a little boy called Auggie who has to deal with growing up with a terrible face abnormality. The story is told via the voices of Auggie and his family & friends. The book deals with many issues and I think it’s a fantastic read for anyone, young or old. Check back here at the weekend for an interview with the author and a chance to win a copy of the book!

13th February 2012 – The English Monster by Lloyd Shepherd
An intriging story delivering historical events with fiction. A worthy and atmospheric historical, crime novel, with a little extra mixed in.

19th February 2012 – Worth Fighting For by Lisa Niemi Swayze
Worth Fighting For is an interesting and moving follow up to Patrick Swayze’s autobiography, by his wife Lisa. It is a powerful read and one that will make readers laugh and cry.

24th February 2012 – Bereft by Chris Womersley
Bereft is the haunting story of a Great War soldier returning to his home town in New South Wales from where he’d fled ten years previously having been accused of murding his own sister. A compelling read.

26th February 2012 – The Life of Rebecca Jones by Angharad Price
It was a joy to read this, a story based in the same area of the world as me. Originally published in Welsh, but now translated into English, The Life of Rebecca Jones tells the story of Rebecca and her family, including her three blind brothers.

Quite a mix of books there, I think you’ll agree. The genres include childrens, historical fiction, crime fiction and autobiography/biography.

I also managed to fit in not one, not two, but three “Meet The Author” posts (including giveaways)! First up was Ian Marchant, an author who lives fairly local to me and who’s book I read at the beginning of the year. Next, was the author of one of my favourite series of books, Christopher Fowler. To say I was delighted would be an understatement! And the latest author to join me in a “Meet The Author” post is the lovely Belinda Bauer. UK readers still have a few days to enter the giveaway to win a copy of her latest book!

I must say, I’m really enjoying doing these “Meet The Author” interviews and I hope you are enjoying reading them too. In fact, there’s another one on its way at the weekend!

February also saw me attend a couple of book events down in London. I got to meet author Lindsey Davis for drinks & a chat arranged by Hodder on Wednesday, 15th February. Then the following evening I went to an event arranged by Quercus and got the biggest goody bag I’ve ever seen! I also got to meet some delightly authors, publishers and bloggers, and look forward to doing it all again some time.

So, all in all, February has been a great month! I also seem to be on the road to discovering why my immune system seemed to go on holiday at Christmas and has yet to return, so that’s good news too. Here’s looking forward to March!

I know!! The short month has really played havoc with my schedule because I didn’t take it into account when I created it!

I loved Bereft. It was just my kind of crime novel although I read some excellent stuff in February. If you’re interested, Kerrie from the ‘Mysteries in Paradise’ blog is amalgamating the best reads of Feb: http://paradise-mysteries.blogspot.com/2012/03/crime-fiction-pick-of-month-february.html

I like the idea of doing a round up at the end of each month and may have to borrow it from you. It’s nice to call in and check out all your reviews for the month in one place.

Writers are not always good at PR. I’m glad you weren’t disappointed.

Five books is still a great total and I always enjoy your reviews and meet the author posts. I hope you get to the bottom of the reason why your immune system is on strike.

I love author events, although I usually can’t speak or say something silly.
