British Books Challenge 2011
Written by Nikki-ann on Monday, 27 December , 2010 at 5:35 pm
The Bookette has set up a brand new challenge for 2011 – The British Books Challenge! The aim of this challenge is to read books by British authors throughout 2011. I think this is a great chance to promote our great British authors and, perhaps, to come across some new ones.
There are two entry categories for the challenge: Home Grown (for British bloggers – a target of 12 books by British authors) and International Friend (for overseas bloggers – read either 6 or 12 books). The books don’t have to be just ones released in 2011, they can be old or new and for any age or genre.
Here are the books I’ve read so far for the challenge:
1. Darkside by Belinder Bauer (My review posted 9th January 2011)
2. Gone by Mo Hayder (My review posted 30th January 2011)
3. Birdman by Mo Hayder (My review posted 9th February 2011)
4. Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch (My review posted 19th February 2011)
5. Hanging Hill by Mo Hayder (My review posted 27th February 2011)
6. Strangers on the 16:02 by Priya Basil (My review posted 1st March 2011)
7. The Chemistry of Death by Simon Beckett (My review posted 6th March 2011)
8. Full Dark House by Christopher Fowler (My review posted 12th March 2011)
9. Written in Bone by Simon Beckett (My review posted 16th March 2011)
10. Whispers of the Dead by Simon Beckett (My review posted 20th March 2011)
11. The Calling of the Grave by Simon Beckett (My review posted 26th March 2011)
12. The End of the Wasp Season by Denise Mina (My review posted 17th April 2011)
13. The Lost Luggage Porter by Andrew Martin (My review posted 26th April 2011)
14. Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch (My review posted 15th May 2011)
15. Johnny Kingdom’s West Country Tales (My review posted 19th May 2011)
16. Now You See Me by S. J. Bolton (My review posted 25th May 2011)
17. The Hunting Ground by Cliff McNish (My review posted 11th June 2011)
18. Fallen Grace by Mary Hooper (My review posted 16th July 2011)
19. Zoe and Beans: The Magic Hoop! by Chloe & Mick Inkpen (My review posted 25th July 2011)
20. Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith (My review posted 30th July 2011)
21. Mud, Sweat and Tears by Bear Grylls (My review posted 9th August 2011)
22. The Secret Speech by Tom Rob Smith (My review posted 21st August 2011)
23. The Colour of Death by Michael Cordy (My review posted 3rd September 2011)
24. Agent 6 by Tom Rob Smith (My review posted 16th September 2011)
25. The Accidental Adventurer by Ben Fogle (My review posted 23rd October 2011)
26. Velvet by Mary Hooper (My review posted 27th November 2011)
27. Bryant & May and The Memory of Blood by Christopher Fowler (My review posted 29th December 2011)
I was also hoping to read Going Postal by Terry Pratchett but I somehow never got around to it. Maybe in 2012!
December 2011 – Well, I far exceeded my target of 12 books. I wonder how I’ll do in 2012…

Hi Nicki-Ann
If you want to read a Pratchett, The Wee Free Men is a great read as the first in his Discworld YA novels. If you didn’t specifically want to read YA, any of the Discworld books are great. I personally really enjoy the witches books (e.g. Wyrd Sisters), as his knowledge of witchy folklore makes for a really interesting read (I love faerie and myth-based stuff). The Discworld books don’t necessarily need to be read in order.
Enjoy the challenge!

That sounds like a fun challenge. As it’s probably been 20 years since I read them, I’m re-reading the entire Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series (Douglas Adams), does that count as 5 books? But do I count as British, or non-British, since I’m both Englishn and American but live in Colorado?

Ohh, this sounds fun! I don’t know if I have read many British books, but this is a good excuse to give some a shot.

Enjoy the challenge. I look forward to learning about new authors and books that I haven’t had the opportunity to know about before now.

[...] The book isn’t released until 6th January, but my copy arrived early and so I thought I’d make it my first book of the year. As Belinda Bauer is a British author, it’s also my first book for the British Books Challenge 2011. [...]

Hi there! Welcome to the British Books Challenge. I am very excited by the wide range of readers that are participating in the challenge. It is great to see that it is going beyond the YA audience. So thanks so much for signing up and best of luck.
